Default Moving up: 1/2 6 max or 2/4 full?

I've been playing 1/2 the last couple of weeks and doing well enough that I'm entertaining the notion of moving up.

Ordinarily, I would just go right to 2/4 full. I've started at the nanos and this is how I've progressed. At this point, is it worth a detour to 1/2 6 max? Will it help advance my game or can many of the lessons be learned at higher levels?

I've got two main goals: become a better poker player and make more money doing it. Certainly 2/4 will help with the latter. But I've still a lot to learn.

Yes and yes. Playing 6-max has definintely sharpened my overall poker skills. You learn a lot about blind stealing, defense, heads-up post-flop play, etc. that in principle you could also learn at full ring but it would take a lot longer since those situations don't arise as often as they do in 6-max.

I agree with jrz - I took a detour to 6-max around 30k hands ago and have played very little full ring since. You will learn a lot more to play against players than how to play your hands in isolation.

You'd be suprised how much more profitable 1/2 6 max is than 1/2 full.

And I agree with the above advice, play some 6max first.

I would recomend that u play some 6-max before u move up, not because u really need it but if u want to become a better player 6-max is really great. Just remember that the swings will be alot bigger so dont be scared. When u beat the 6-max u can move up to 2-4 (not a big diffrens).

If u dont feel right at the limit dont hasitate to go back and train som more. No shame in that.

GL and have fun // Dunno

These two games are so dissimilar that it isn't even funny.

Here is my more complete response.

Should I play 6-max?

I'm going through this same thing right now. I ran about 3BB/100 over the last 10K hands at $1/2full. I figured I'd take a shot at moving up to $2/4 or trying out the $1/2 6max. I've only played maybe 500 hands at $2/4 but I've noticed there's still lots of fish and LAGs, but the pots end up 2 or 3 way a lot more often by the turn. The pot size is larger ($) but typically a lot lower in BB.

So far I've played like 1,200 hands of 6 max...it's fun. After playing 6max, full ring feels like snails pace. At first I was a bit overwhelmed, felt kinda lost, but after a few hundred hands and checking out the 6max posts, hand charts, etc, it's a lot of fun. Granted, I've been running real good at 6max so far (which adds to the enjoyment).

You defenitely see A LOT more bluffing at 6max. I've had guys donkraise the river with nothing, bet/raise every street with nothing, etc. Since it's faster paced, I find myself being distracted less - ie no surfing the internet - so my game is sharper. I'm not one of the 4 or 8 tablers, usually 2 for me, but the faster pace of the 6max keeps you in the game.

Lastly, the bonuses clear faster. This is great for the big reloads - like Multipokers this month, because you get a lot more hands/hr.

I'll probably be playing the 2 limits in parrallel - sometimes 1/2 6max, sometimes 2/4 full. Defenitely give the 6max a try though. It's fun.

Good Luck.

Great info. Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to keep playing until I hit a nice round 10k hands for 1/2 and then switch it up with 1/2 6 max.
