Default Overlay?

Could someone define the term 'overlay' for me? I see thrown around quite a bit and i'm not quite sure what it means.

For example, bonuswhores says Empire's $200000 guaranteed tournament has a $242.12 overlay. What does this mean?

BTW. Sorry if this is the wrong forum, didn't know where else to post this.

Default Re: Overlay?

Sometimes a guaranteed tournament does not get enough entries to equal the guaranteed prize pool. This is overlay. The 242 is just the amount every player gets extra because the total amount of players isnt enough.

say you have a $100 buyin tournament that guaranteed 200k. 200,000 / $100 = 2000 entries to equal the prize pool.

if only 1000 people sign up, the overlay is $100.00
