From the cardplayer bog at last night's tournament.
"Out of the sky ESPN decided to end today's play and resume tomorrow at 2 p.m. That means that all 10 players will be on ESPN, but only 9 will actually get paid. Here are the final chip counts." Can there be any doubt why this happened? Here are the final 10. 1. Claude Cohen - $110,000 2. Robert Williamson III - $153,000 3. Allen Cunningham - $202,000 4. Davood Mehrmand - $125,000 5. Surinder Sunar - $96,000 6. Phil Ivey - $494,000 7. Phil Hellmuth - $114,000 8. Eddy Sharf - $150,000 9. Richard St Peter - $162,000 10. Sigi Stockinger - $213,000 |

Sigi Stockinger - $213,000 [/ QUOTE ] I spoke to one of the WSOP producers. You may think they did this because of Hellmuth (that's what I thought), but that's not the case. They were down to 10 very late at night and since eliminating the 10th person (they're only paying 9 and 9 make the TV table) would likely take a long time, they opted to just start tomorrow with this group. They called it a night really late (2am), and all players had to be at the Rio at 12pm the next day. If they played until they hit 9 players, they would have likely played til 4am, and the players would've still had to come in at 12pm. Less than ideal. Your conspiracy theory (and mine) is no good here. Sorry to disappoint. |

I have no doubt that they would say that, but it makes no sense. It was very likely that one of the players would get knocked out within the next 15-30 minutes. Just look at the blog. Players were getting eliminated every 5-10 minutes. While it's true that none of the final 10 could be considered very short-stacked, I still believe that someone would have been eliminated within the next 30 minutes -- no doubt.
It's just good business to not take a chance that the shortest stack, PH, would be eliminated before the TV coverage starts. If they didn't reach this decision it would be a big mistake. |

Now that we got that cleared up, I must admit I had the same 'conspiracy' theory about them shutting down to make sure PH got in the telecast. |

For all intense and purpose he is one of the shortest stacks. Anyway, it's not really a conspiracy theory at all. I think it's just good business and the only explanation that makes sense. If you look at the blog you'll see that the players were dropping like flies and many of them had significant stacks. Anyway, no big deal. I know I love it when a TV poker show has Phil in it and I'm sure most people feel the same way so I hope he last long.
