Voltaire is one of my favroite people in history. I hesitate to call him a philosopher, though he was, though not in the conventional sense. He was mostly famous as a supreme conversationalist, that is, he was thought of as the most intresting person in the world in his time. anyway...
Someone once remarked to him that: "life is hard" to which Voltaire replied in his typical concise and razor-sharp manner: "compared to what?" thoughts? |

Death is easy, it's just the being Dead that sucks, which is why I am, trying to hook up a reincarnation deal with the Buddhists.

Life is interesting. Perhaps that's the point.
If we do not find something pleasent, at least we will find something new. - Candide Voltaire's Philosophical Dictionary is still a great read even if dated somewhat. His wit and sarcasm shine through brillantly. And he made, on occassion, simple but rather profound remarks in this book, for example, "a child is neither atheist or theist, he is nothing." We must cultivate our garden. - Candide . |
