Default The pope is an idiot. Catholics are dumb in general.

Pope Assails Condom Use

VATICAN CITY, June 10 (Reuters) - In a speech on Friday to bishops from five African countries, Pope Benedict XVI attacked the use of condoms to fight H.I.V. and AIDS, saying the church was leading the fight against the epidemic by teaching chastity and fidelity.

(it is on the bottom of the page)

In the past 2000 years the chastity movement has failed repeatedly. The proof of this is all around you. But hey, these brilliant Catholics still have hope that they can convince the next generation of children that sex is evil.

Their refusal to acknowledge that some might not heed their advice and bizzare condemnation of condoms because of their inexcusable nearsightedness makes one wonder why the hell anyone listens to these morons anyway.

Meanwhile the facts are clear (UNAIDS/WHO statistics ) from 1983-2001 20 million people died from AIDS related illness.

In 2003, young people (15-24 years old) accounted for half of all new HIV infections worldwide, more than 6,000 became infected with HIV every day.

~40 million people are currently infected with the disease.

It boggles the mind that these cults and their bizzare practices still exist today....

There is a silver lining however. Social darwinisim will wipe these people out faster than the rest of us, eventually logic will be king instead of fairy tales...

Are you suggesting that abstinence is *not* an effective measure to prevent contracting AIDS?

Abstinence is the only truly effective "measure" to prevent sexually transmitted diseases....

"Abstinence-only" education is a proven less effective prevention strategy than "abstinence-based" approaches - and that is the real issue here, isn't it?

No, because we aren't talking about education.

Ummm, no. That's not the issue at all. The Church isn't in the disease prevention business.

Again, people don't listen to the pope about abstinence, it's silly to think they'll suddenly start listening about condoms. Blaming the Church when their teachings are 100% effective is to absolve the idiots who contract AIDS of any and all personal responsibility. They messed up, they die. Them's the breaks.

That would be blaming the victims though, wouldn't it?

Abstinence is the perfect antidote against AIDS. But, unfortunately, only in theory, only in the world of spherical cows.

Abstaining from poker also prevents you from losing, ever. Not playing hoops protects you from a heart attack in the yard. Stop traveling by air and you will never be killed in an airplane crash. Leave your car parked for ever to also eliminate car accidents - safe at any speed.

Your rhetorical question is telling only half the story. The other half is that abstaining from sex is for the overwhelming majority of humans nigh impossible - be it pre-marital or marital sex. (Yeah, I know the jokes about marital sex.)

What if a doctor gives you only one cure for your disease and that cure is, for all practical purposes, impossible to materialize? That doctor is literally giving you no cure at all. He appears to be helping but is leaving you helpless.

This is what the Catholic Church is doing (and most other strains of Christianity as well, i.e. the Eastern Orthodox Church, etc). The religious leaders are preventing people from getting protection from AIDS.

I mean practical and realistic protection. As opposed to never-happen, pie-in-the-sky, "theoretically correct" protection.

Default Light This

A modified abstinence program would do a LOT to combat the spread of AIDS. Just this: no casual sex. If people saved interpersonal sex for serious relationships (instead of mere loin whims, or in "dating"), AIDS would spread far more slowly and affect far fewer people.

It isn't all that difficult, Cyrus, really. If you don't have someone special in your life and you're horny, you can always "be your own best friend." Why doesn't the Catholic Church promote this as a substitute, anyway?

The success in Uganda in combating the spread of AIDS is a direct function of its use of promotion of abstinence. The Uganadan govt. only distributes condoms to high risk individuals, most notably prostitutes.

The Church doesnt believe in sex separated from the procreative act.

Quote from bible?

I remember reading in the bible that married couples can't defile the bedroom.

I'm not interested in the church's views, only what is in the bible btw.
