Playing round by round and sitting out 1 round = -EV? (cross-posted)
Not sure where this goes... I play in a 10/25 NL game that is very profitable but sometimes doesn't get off the ground if the casino can't get enough players. They sometimes change it to 10/25 NL and 5/10 PLO round by round to attract the PLO freaks. I don't have a clue when it comes to PLO, I mean I have a basic idea of how it is played and know a few things you want to do and don't want to do, basically hand selection preflop. So I would imagine that I would probably play like a rock for most of the PLO round and/or only play the NL round. It's time charge at $10/.5 hour, which means we probably get 1 round of each every half hour. I'm thinking that the added action of the PLO players who are maniacs at NL makes it profitable also there may be a few players who have trouble adjusting back and forth which might favor me. And who knows, I may just get AAKKds and be able to get it all in preflop for the PLO rounds...Anyone ever encounter anything like this/what'd they do?
Thanks. Edit: Cross posted since I only know you guys and trust your advice over other forums. Would really appreciate any feedback from people that have encountered situations like this. Thanks again. |

learn PLO, it's fun, it will make you a better player, etc. it sounds like a good blinds setup because PLO games usually play a little bigger than HE. keep in mind your truly big edges are generally going to be postflop.

Hi AZK,
Learn PLO. Until then, play very tightly pre-flop, and play only the nuts and nut draws post-flop. Don't go crazy with the nut straight on a multi-way flop if you don't have some nice redraws. Know the players. Don't try to get all your money in pre-flop with Aces; your edge isn't that big, and it makes your hand very -EV to play post-flop. You will find whatever EV you gained pre-flop quickly evaporating. But don't sit out the PLO rounds. Play tight, take your lumps, and get it back and then some in the Hold'em rounds. This is gonna be a sweet game. |

Turnip/Cero:
I plan on learning PLO, it's been one of those things I've always wanted to do but I wanted to get better at holdem first. I'm nowhere near the end of learning at NL, so I didn't want to take on another task, but now realize it might help improve my play at holdem. Do you both regularly play PLO? I cringe at the fact that I decided to learn NL holdem instead of PLO, since I only play at this casino. The PLO 5/10 game is wild with most stacks in the 6k+ range, if I knew as much about PLO as I do about NL, compared to what these guys know, I'd be a millionare. You should see some of the hands they turn over, they are just crazy, aggressive gambling types. I don't know where their money comes from... |
