Default AK blows

2/4 NL Online

This is basic stuff but always gets me in trouble.

Folded to me in MP with AKo. I open for $16 to go. Button reraises to $45. Folded back to me. My action?

We both start with $400 stacks, I have NO READ ON THE BUTTON. This is the main problem. How do you play this against an unknown. When A or K flops and they have QQ/JJ you dont get paid. When crap flops, you have to fold to their flop bet.

Is this a reraise or fold sitation preflop?

I really do hate AK.....

In these situations i always fold cause like you said when you hit you wont get paid off. When neither off you hit he will take the pot. When he hit and you dont he will take the pot. when both hit, he is more likely to have the better hand, unless he has AQ. plus you have no position.

And at low stakes everytime you raise they 'believe' you have AK, so your hand is face up.

I was just thinkign about that. The deeper the stacks are, the worse AK is in a cash game. It's reverse implied odds because you are only 1/3 to hit your hand on the flop and you aren't getting much if you hit your hand since they are afraid of the overcard when they have QQ JJ etc. Also a lot of players cold call with QQ, so a raise on your open could have you in bad shape. Is this a full game? He's not doing this with AQ, so folding isn't bad. If you have pot odds to call assuming your top pair will be good you need to call though. If this is shorthanded, I wouldn't be able to fold it preflop though.

you should call and learn how to play post-flop poker.
you should also be raising w/ a wide variety of hands when opening in MP.

What's the difference if they still only reraise you with a select hand set that may or may not include QQ or JJ.

No, the difference is that you can call with other hands but not AK because AK still has the inherent reverse implied odds vs something like QQ.

The point that you shoudl be raising with a range of hands in MP isn't directly relevant to the OP.
