Default Being underbankrolled (no/low content)

I was dicking around on a fishy site (I have about 4k on the site, half of my bankroll) and I saw just about the best 50/100 game I have ever seen. It had reported a 71% players/flop and after watching I realize it played worse than the party .5/1 (no kidding...4 players to the river with crap).

Not gonna bore you with bad beat stories, but today I have half the bankroll I did yesterday, *sigh*. Bad part is that I knew that I don't NEARLY have the bankroll for the game, but it was so damn juicy I was slobering all over my keyboard.

Long story short: take shots at big games, but not games where you have 80BB of which you are only going to play with 40 of

I think I will be in the morning...hasn't really set in yet.

A gem:

I raise on button with: Qd, 10h
after 3 very loose players.

SB 3-bets, all call.

Flop (Board: 10d, 4s, 3c):
checked to me, I bet, sb c/r's, 1 caller.

Turn (Board: 10d, 4s, 3c, 3d):

SB bets out, 1 fold, I call

River (Board: 10d, 4s, 3c, 3d, 6s):

bet/call

villian shows: 5d, 7d (straight to the Seven)

I'd have punched out the monitor at that point. Or gone out to find a little guy to pick a fight with...

Villain's flop c/r was with 2 backdoor draws and undercards? That's pretty crappy IMHO.

If I were to come up with a list of things to do to improve my chances of success while playing on short money, raising on the button with QTo wouldn't be one of them.

Also, you didn't lose enough money on that hand. Think about the range of hands that SB ought to checkraise there.

One of the hallmarks of someone 'taking a shot' is that they tend to play weak tight, which might have encouraged him to make a play at you on the flop (especially because with your preflop raise you most likely had high cards). After that the turn and river are standard. I don't think its that bad of a play on the part of your opponent, and you might just have been being outplayed. Not saying that's what happened, but given you're not used to those limits you should at least consider it a possibility.

Default Fold preflop

Seriously, when you are playing with only 40BBs, variance is your worst enemy. Raising with QTo, while marginally profitable in the situation described (although it is debatable) will vastly increase your variance. +EV decisions are not enough when playing with short roll. You have to have a decent EV/variance ratio also, unless you really don't care about the shot bankroll. But you want to stay in this juicy game, because while you may give up small EV high variance situation right now, you have a high chance of High EV small variance situation later. So don't waste your limited bankroll on marginal winners with high variance. This is why it is so difficult to play underbankrolled.
