Default NYC vegeterians

hey, i have to entertain some vegeterian friends tonight but the majority of vegetables I eat are on the side w/whatever entree I'm eating.

I'm stuck and looking for NYC vegeterain places. I'd appreciate any suggestions and if they're good I certainly plan on going back.

Thanks.

Finally a topic which is my area of expertise!

Here is a great list of vegetarian places:

Red Bamboo on W 4th just off 6th. Amazing but super crowded on weekends.
Vegetarian Paradise 2 on W 4th just of 6th. A couple doors down from Red Bamboo, food is Asian influenced and VP2 is less crowded and more spacious.
Pongal on Lexington and 27th is the best vegetarian Indian place I've eaten at in the city.
Candle Cafe and Candle 79 on UES both great options.
Zen Palate on Union Square has a more upscale section upstairs. The ground level restaurant is only average, but the upstairs one is excellent.
Gobo on 6th Ave (maybe 8th streetish?) is similar to Zen Palate but a little more upscale.

this is so much better than google.

Paluka and Turnip thanks.

I ate at Zen palate and didn't think it was too good but I'll give the upstairs another go. I'll be trying all these out sooner or later so maybe i'll bump into you there.

Red Bamboo on W 4th just off 6th is great.
-- They make "meat" dishes with non-meat products (i.e. chicken parm, philly cheesesteak, shrimp fritters, veal parmesan, etc. etc.) Was skeptical going in, as most fake-meat i've ever had has not been good- but this place did it well. Atmosphere is nice, but crowded.

Pongal is also good veg indian food- think Paluka mentioned that in his post.

Right next door to Pongal is Dosa Hut- also Indian. If you've never had a Dosa, you should def try it out. It is a south indian dish that is basically a large crepe, with a spicy potato and onion filling served with lentils and cococunt chutney on the side.

hope this helps
