[/ QUOTE ] In 21 innings this year, Roger Clemens has allowed 12 hits, 1 earned run, walked 2 batters, allowed 1 homerun and struck out 25. [/ QUOTE ] So: 21 times this guy has pitched an innings, and an innings end if and only of 3 people are "out". Out of all of the times he threw the ball, the batsmen have only managed to connect their bat with the ball 12 times. Only 1 time has somebody been able to run from 3rd base to home during these 21 innings. Wtf is walking a batter? Are they disabled? 1 time some guy hit the ball so hard that it went directly into the fans' area 25 times the batsmen failed to hit the ball 3 times, or couldn't get to first base. How did I do? |

Re: I Know, I Know, Sample Size Too Small
[ QUOTE ]
Out of all of the times he threw the ball, the batsmen have only managed to connect their bat with the ball 12 times. [/ QUOTE ] Close. If the ball is caught after you hit it, you're out. If the ball is thrown to your base before you reach it, you're out. If you're tagged and you're not on base, you're out. [ QUOTE ] Wtf is walking a batter? Are they disabled? [/ QUOTE ] In baseball, there's a small area where, if the pitchers throws it through, it's a strike. If the hitter swings and misses it's a strike. Three strikes and you're struckout. On the opposite end of the spectrum, if the pitcher throws it outside this zone and the hitter does not swing, it's called a "ball." 4 balls and the hitter gets to go to first base. Strikeouts and walks are the biggest indicators of how well a pitcher is doing. Lots of strikeouts and not a lot of walks are very good. |

21 times this guy has pitched an innings, and an innings end if and only of 3 people are "out". [/ QUOTE ] Correct
En réponse à:
Out of all of the times he threw the ball, the batsmen have only managed to connect their bat with the ball 12 times. [/ QUOTE ] Kind of. They can connect with the ball, but still not get a hit. The ball has to be in fair territory, and they have to get to first base before a player on the other team throws the ball there (kind of like a wicket). Also, the ball can't be caught while it's in the air, or else it's an out. Here's fair territory, in green:
En réponse à:
Only 1 time has somebody been able to run from 3rd base to home during these 21 innings. [/ QUOTE ] Yes, without there being an error on the play. If a fielder messes up a play, he gets an error, and the run counts, but not as an earned run against the pitcher, because he did his job, but somebody else messed up.
En réponse à:
Wtf is walking a batter? Are they disabled? [/ QUOTE ] Throwing 4 balls to a batter in one plate appearence, where a ball is a pitch outside the strike zone.
En réponse à:
1 time some guy hit the ball so hard that it went directly into the fans' area [/ QUOTE ] Yup, in fair territory.
En réponse à:
25 times the batsmen failed to hit the ball 3 times, or couldn't get to first base. [/ QUOTE ] A strike out is 3 strikes, so you got that. A strike is either a pitch where the batter swings and misses, hits the ball into foul territory, or it crosses the plate in the strike zone, regardless of whether the batter swings. A batter cannot stike out by hitting a foul ball however (unless it's a bunt, but don't worry about that), instead he just continues to have 2 strikes against him. Not being able to get the 1st base is just an out, not neccesarily a strike out. Balls and strikes don't carry over to a player's next plate appearance. |
