What should I do with a straight draw?
Hello
I raised with AhJh after one ok early limper (OK.) Only one bad player (BP) called. 3 handed. Flop came QcTc9s, which gave me a straight draw. OK check, I bet, BP called, and OK called. Turn came 9d. OK check, I check, BP bet, and OK called. What's my play? Thanks Soh |

Re: What should I do with a straight draw?
You have 6 clean outs being the three non-club 8's and K's as well as the possible two non-club aces. Given the pot size you are approximately a 5:1 dog on a pot that's offering 5:1. This is a call. Hope you hit!

I had a 6 clean outs on the flop. But the turn card was 9, which made the board QT9-9. I also have to think about the possibility that one of my opponents might have J with me. In that case, I have to split the pot even if I hit my hand. |

I think you should have bet the flop, because you had two straight draws, one of which was an open ender.

He did bet the flop. Also, only a K or an 8 made his straight, so he really only had one open-ender (with only the K giving him the nuts). He also had an overcard to the flop.

you're probably splitting the pot with an 8, but i think the 3rd player pushes this one towards a call

I think you can call... you are getting 6.5-1 on your call, and your call closes the action. Someone else may have a J, but I think that is offset by the pot odds you are getting.

Re: What should I do with a straight draw?
I'd probably fold the turn, since your cards are likely dead, and there's a chance you are drawing dead or to a split with 4 of your outs.
In other words, you may be hitting your hand just to pay someone else off. Calling is not bad, but one shoudl be cautious on the end. Hope it worked out. |

Re: What should I do with a straight draw?
Folding is absurd. Not only are Queen's and 8's reliable outs but so are Aces. That's 11 reliable outs. Even the three Jacks may be outs. I don't have any concern that the 8c, Qc, or Ac will give somebody a flush.
You are fearing big hands when the action gives no indication that such a hand is out there. If you make your hand- even Aces up, you should not be cautios on the end. You should at least bet your hand and should seriously consider going for a checkraise. |
