Default need help: first vegas trip- food?

As you can guess, I'll be playing mostly poker in LV. Is comping going to take care of most of my food costs? Is there any grocery store anywhere near the strip, or is that just wishful thinking?

I'll be staying right by the Tropicana.

P.S. goal is cheapest possible.

Poker players dont ever get comps. Most every casino has a cafe. Some are inexpensive. There is a CVS drugs and walgreens on the strip.

At the Mirage, you have to ask, but you can get like a $10 comp for a couple of hours of play to use at one of thier cafes/buffet/cali pizza kitchen

Agreed on the IP -- this is why I play my one token tournament there. It's nice to be able to grab a cookie or sandwich, and to be able to get your own cup of water or coffee.

As for the comp, I wouldn't bother... the restaurants and buffet there are horrible. The burger place is fine, about what you'd expect.

I ate at the Mirage cafe last time I was there. The meatloaf sandwich was good and enormous. Same goes for the meatball sandwich. My sis polished off a fraction of it, though she is a light eater.

A discount would have been great though. If you can, please provide some details on obtaining this, especially for when the staff is busy.

I just asked the manager of the poker room about the $10 coupon, and they said that they didn't have any at the moment, but come back in a couple of hours and they will have some.

This was in late Dec.

HAHAHA HA HA AHAHAH......

Id assume 1 meal a day perhaps. I know the Mandalay bay will comp you a lunch type deal at the snack bar right next door if you sit for a few hours( maybe like 6..).

I think a few have like free buffets during the night or in the morning to keep patrons adding to the rake. I wouldnt assume more than 1 meal unless you specifically plan to be in a certain casino at a certain time for a certain freebie.

Most of the casinos have deli's or snack bars that are not too expensive and have ok food. Reportedly, NYNY has a pretty good deli. If you play at Orleans, there is a Subway right across from the poker room. I also love to eat at a Taco's Mexico that is between the Rio and the 15. They have a drive thru and let me tell you that an Al Pastor burrito at 4am after a night of heavy drinking tastes mighty fine. Those spicy carrots are pretty good too.

Avoid the buffets...they are overpriced, and not very good except for Spice Market Buffett at Aladdin and The Buffet at Bellagio. And those are very pricey at $24 and $30 respectively.

Gold Coast(near Rio also) has a special in their Monterrey Room cafe that is a 16 oz t-bone with beans, potato wedges, onion rings, salad, garlic bread, and a 12 oz beer for $9.95.
