at the lower stakes, aim for 40% or more, as a realistic number. assuming 10 handed sng.

something just over 40% is a good goal for itm then. but if you have a strong ROI and your ITM is just below 40% you shouldn't worry. remember your sample sizes.

500 is a good start, but really you should have a decent feel for if you are good enough to beat the game around 100 or 200 games.

Play 200 to get an idea of your ITM. Play 500 to get a better idea. After a couple thousand, you'll know pretty well where you stand. There have been some really interesting posts by people with thousands of these tournaments, who are winning players in the long run, but have stretches of 250 SNGs straight where they actually lose money.

A general comment about ITM...
Don't put too much stock in the ITM. Someone can have an low ITM 20%, but make more than someone with an ITM of 30% if he has a high percentage of 1st place finishes. If you're getting a 40% ITM, you're doing great!! I started in the 22's with a 60% ITM up until about 150 tournaments. Now at 250 $22 tournaments, I'm still a high 40% ITM, but only a 16% ROI. It can be streaky, so stick with it.

I think ROI is more meaningful than ITM. It basically tells you how much you make per SNG you play and lets you figure out your hourly wage (which you should care about more than your ITM).

Also, if you haven't already, download Aleo's awsome spreadsheet. It will help you keep track of ITM, ROI and lots of other useful info.

Good luck,
Steve
