I voted for Barry but it was tough, because I think its most likely Payton. The reason I voted for Barry though was because I am giving him the benefit of the doubt that if he was still playing, he would have shattered Paytons' mark. Simply the most dangerous weapon I can think of at the running back posistion, ever.

Anyways, thoughts?

Your list features several glaring omissions, including OJ and Sayers.

The correct answer, though, is Payton. Barry was the best rusher. Payton was the greatest running back.

[/ QUOTE ] so vote other then. I don't consider Sayers one of the greats though, his lack of longevity hurts him, OJ is null as well, but thats what happens when you kill your wife.

I think it is generally assumed that we are talking rushing and pass catching ability.

I certainly hope that isn't true. Barry's inability to block anyone was very detrimental to the Lions' offense. All the other main contenders for this throne (Emmitt, Walter, Jim) won titles and generally played for good teams. Barry never took his team within a sniff of the promised land.

[/ QUOTE ] yup and Barry played for horrible teams, which IMO makes his rushing totals that much more impressive, but I agree zero rings does hold him back some.

I see that you are from Wisconsin, so this is clearly bitter resentment that the Pack decided on Big Tony Mandarich over Barry. And Barry took his team to the NFC championship the year the Mark Rypien Redskins beat the Bills in 1992. Granted they got crushed that game, but before it, they were sniffing.

Didn't Sander's dad introduce him as "the third greatest running back of all-time!" at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony?

If your pops don't say you're the best, I don't think you have much of a leg to stand on.

you know, if Bo hadn't suffered that injury, he'd be in the top 4 easily.

The man as a freak.
