I am a very green poker player. I have read WLLHE and TOP. Just recently began reading SSH but I am finding the concepts difficult to grasp. Is there a thread that discusses this book section by section or concept by concept? I am basically looking for a study guide for this book to help me wade thru all the info.
Thanks Jay |

Try a search of the "books and software" forum. I think they did a book-club type discussion of this a while back.

I think the Book/Software forum did a book review of it a few months back... you may need to search the archives for it. searching for SSH will bring up about 1 million entries a day...
As for the book itsself. I really stand by the idea that this book is more written for advanced players. If you feel that you aren't understanding the concepts, you may need to read another book then revisit SSH. I would recommend Hilger's book (Internet Texas Hold'em) for a good reason: SSH was originally supposed to just be about how to play the flop. Many times in the book (and in this forum) we really push post flop skills. ITH's flop section is great. It breaks down the flop into many different holdings (from quads/boats to overcards) and bases decisions on the coordination of the board. Every section also has a quick quiz. I think this will help your game (and most of the other posters on this forum). It certainly helped my game. Good luck... |

Start playing.
I read a few books to hopefully reduce my fishy cross-section. While I understood what was written, I didn't really start to grasp the concepts until I had a bunch of hands under my belt. |

Good point. I have currently logged approximately 8000 hands (5000 SNG's and 3000 ringgames). Is this an appropriate amount to play prior to delving into SSH?
Thanks Jay |

It probably varies from person to person. You have me beat handwise so I'm hardly the person to comment.

I played just a few thousand ring game hands before reading SSH. I read WLLHE by LJ first, and a couple months later got SSH.
While the topics are more advanced, it's not exactly rocket science either. Just read carefully and pay attention. |
