The United States will no doubt be the biggest provider of aid to the citizens of the countries that have unfortunately been victimized by the devastating tsunamis that has caused thousands of lives and suffering in Asia.
Should the United States act separately from the United Nations by directly giving aid to the victims? Afterall, the UN has called us "stingy" even though they didn't even have a clue what the United States is planning to do (which we all know will be bigger than the combined contributions of all the countries in the UN put together). Should the US bypass the UN when it comes to helping the tsunami victims? Do we really have to go through their beaureaucracy and corruption in order to give the victims the help that they urgently need? |

I wonder if we should count the cost of the Navy vessels and personnel we are sending to aid in relief efforts. Also one piece of useful informatio in ACplayers link said that the initial pledge is just that, an initial donation. More will be donated once an assessment is done of the situation. I doubt many smaller countries will go beyond what they have already pledged. |

Just for the record the Brits are giving 27 Million that works out at alot MORE per capita.
In relation to its size and wealth the USA is perhaps one of the stingiest countries in the world when it comes to forieghn aid. You can go on assuming the opposite. |

If I am wrong, it is because my source was wrong.
Here it is. [ QUOTE ] Japan has sent three navy vessels to Thailand and pledged 40 million dollars to provide emergency food, medicine and shelter to tsunami victims. The relief mission to southern Thailand marks the first time officially-pacifist Japan has used its own ships to help in an overseas disaster. The two destroyers and one supply ship that were sent had just ended a mission in the Indian Ocean to provide logistical support to the US campaign in Afghanistan. Japan has pledged 30 million dollars in direct aid to tsunami-hit countries... and nearly ten-million dollars to Japanese aid organisations working affected regions. A 20-member Japanese medical team is in Sri Lanka and disaster surveillance experts sent to Indonesia. [/ QUOTE ] Source Melch |
