Default straight vs. flush

why isn't straight ranked higher than flush? imo, in modern Hold'em poker games, straight should beat flush.

thanks

That's a rather bold claim to make with no justification given. Has combinatorics changed since the 5 stud days?

This statement ranks right up there with your 30 wins in 30 days quest.

I think 3 pair should beat 2 pair.

I think both these hands should beat 3 of a kind, b/c variety is the spice of life.

I suspect this might explain your clear anti-flush bias.

I agree Kenny. Half the time I wish they would abolish the flush in holdem, but then fish wouldn't be able to say "but it was soooooooted."

If it seems that people make flushes more than they make straights it's because people tend to play suited cards more than unsuited cards. With two unsuited connectors you'll make a straight twice as often as you'll make a flush. When they are suited, you'll make a flush three times for every straight that comes in. At least that's what my simulations are telling me.

Why should a straight be higher when it's easier to make?

I'm not sure what you mean by "easy" to make but flushes are less common than straights.

A flush is better than a straight for the same reason an Ace is better than a King: Some guy just figured it should be that way.
