i just finished 45th in a $33 mtt at PP. over 1000 entrants. anyways I really played solid poker for more than 3.5 hours. i was basically in average shape the whole tourney. no real stress at all till this final hand. how do you think i played it?
46 players left. average chips is 20,000. blinds are 1000/2000. Im sitting at 20,000 chips. I get dealt 99 UTG. I really wasnt sure what my best move was. I figured since i was close to only 10 big blinds left, its either a raise all in or fold preflop. now is this a good move? So i raised all in. I would of been very happy to just win the blinds. but i get called by the button, who barely has me covered. He flips over AQ os. i hit my set on the flop, but the turn and river brought running spades to give him the nut flush, and again, i taste an ugly loss. it has been nothing but bad beats for me real late in the tourneys for last couple of weeks.\ now im second guessing myself and wondering if this could of been avoided? If i just raise 3 or 4 times the BB, I dont want to give a AK or J10 a cheap flop. thats another reason i raised all in this situation. so how would you guys of played this hand? thanks. |

When you have 10x bb you need to raise all in or fold.
My standard play here with 99 given a standard table is to open push. It is hard to laydown 99 here imo when you need to get some chips to make a run at a big finish. This is a pretty close decision and I might not push with 88. Some people might not open push here, I would be interested to hear the reasoning. My reasoning is basically you have a decent chance to take the blinds, you might well get called by overs if you do and if you face an overpair you have to tip your cap. It is a much easier decision after a few folders. Playing middle pairs always leaves me scratching my head so like I said, I would be happy to hear other thoughts. |

it is just a personal preferance.
you made money right? being UG, puts more weight towards fold, but it also should give your push more strenght. The call with AQ was pretty weak. |

yes i made the money. but not the good money. yes the AQ call was pathetic, we were very close in chips, he risked his tourney on that hand. and he went on to finish 3rd. he was on a run of calling allins with AJ, AQ and KQ and kept busting out players, with his weak calls. goes to show that even bad players can do well.

I push and take my lumps when I'm beat. You're hurting more over this cause you flopped a set with it!!!!! Tough break, but i like the play.

You got the desired result by haveing a weaker hand call you for +EV. Unfortunately he got lucky.

I'd have made a pot-sized raise in the same situation, not that I think going-all in is bad.
I just don't really like to put ALL my chips in pre-flop, unless I've no option. (at a full table, that is) Thats just because if there's an utter disaster I want a chance to recover from it. Recovering from last place to win can happen. |

but you can't fold here if reraised, that would be a very bad mistake.

Well... let me put it another way.
If I go all-in with 99 and someone calls, I expect to be in trouble. Its either a higher pair or 2 overcards, I'm certainly not confident. If 2 people call I'm toast. |

However, after raising in this situation you will be severely crippled if you decide to check-fold. If this is your thinking just fold to begin with (in my opinion its too tight but its better than raising and folding).
