Default Consciousness/Souls/Animals

Do we simply say we are conscious and animals are not because we are more intelligent than animals and/or "God created us in His image"?

Aren't animals conscious of themselves and their environment? Dogs seem pretty conscious to me.

How do I know other people are conscious and not just robots programmed to react to different stimuli to simulate consciousness?

"Your soul is MINE!"

For those who voted that animals do not have souls:

Why don't animals have souls?

Your results will be skewed by voters who don't believe humans have souls.

Do you believe that animals have souls? != Do you believe that people have souls and animals do not?

I think the important point is that only humans,(at least for now and at least on this planet) are aware of the fact they will die.

This is a big statement.

Many mammals form social and emotional bonds with others, feel sorrow, happiness, jealously and other emotions, and mourn the loss of their young. Surely they must have some awareness of existence and non existence, even if that awareness is not specific.

BTW, how many humans can truly grasp the concept of death?

Wow, I didn't even think of that. That's an excellent point I did not consider.

I don't think that that is entirely proven, though.
As there are cows which cry and behave as if they are facing impending doom or certain death when they are lining up to be slaughtered.

No evidence. If I am wrong then animals are fully conscious. And while I think for now I am right. I believe it is reasonable that KOKO could learn the concept. What will Christians say about that?
