As of about 1 hour ago-my folks finally caved and we got broadband (Comcast). So far everything's fine on my computer but when my parents attempt to plug their laptop into the same connection (same modem and everything) nothing happens.
Any suggestions? |

If they don't have a router, they will have to turn off the modem before switching over to the laptop. Each Network interface has a MAC address and the modem assigns an IP address based on the MAC address. By turning it off, the modem will reassign you a new IP.
Good luck |

Most newer modems have a 'standby' button. Make sure they really turn it off and that they don't hit 'standby' by mistake. Otherwise it will not work.
