Default The Sahara

Spent some time at the Sahara in Vegas last week. Here is my brief trip report:

* Super Soft limit games! I was up 36 Big Bets after only 2 hours.
* 2/4, 4/8 (if they get enough players), 1/2 NL on nights with a tournament (more on this below)
* As of this week, Tournaments now take place every night of the week at 7PM - $40 buy in with one $20 rebuy

This poker room is dead during the day with local old timers (they are lucky if they get one table gowning by 4PM). But at night the newly expanded room (10 tables) gets rocking because of the tournament. Every table in the house was used, it was sold out with 12 players per table (120 players). The dealers aren't that great, but they were very friendly. Its a smoker friendly room, but there is no smoking during the tournament (at tournament tables only). Starting chips are T1500, you can rebuy at any time only once. The comp system is great - they will give you one after just an hour or so, you can get a $4 coupon off the buffet or the diner, which is essentially 50% off the average meal.

For a very cheep hotel room with a great old-school pool, the Sahara was a great choice. With access to the Monorail, and the new poker room I'd stay here again. Mind you its not stunning ala the Bellagio, but for cheep this is the way to go.

PS: My room rate was $49/night + $10 upgrade for a premium room

I rarely hear anything bad about the Sahara poker room. But, I've only played there once because it is on the northern tip of the Strip. With the new monorail, it's an option for people visiting Las Vegas.

I was speaking to the pit boss about the NASCAR component of the Sahara, he said it should be removed soon, the management is in the process of re-branding now that the Monorail is operational.

Can you imagine if the brought back the Sahara to it's old splendor? It could be really special, the last of the old-school 50's resorts.

The Monorail starts behind the Sahara, stops at the Hilton, then goes back up to the Strip at the Vieitian and continues South along the Strip stopping at the Flamingo, Bally's, Paris (I think), and stops at the MGM Grand. That's covers most of the Strip.

The only major casinos you can't get close to are Mandalay Bay and the Luxor on the Southern tip of the Strip and the Stardust and Circus Circus on the Northern end (because it runs east of the Strip to get to the off-Strip Hilton).

I read that one of the wheels fell off of the monorail. Apparently it doesn't do very well.
