PP 5/10: KK capped preflop. what to do against a sudden turn raise.
i've only been at the table for 2 orbits, but it's one of the ones where everyone folds to an early raise preflop(18% table vpip). i haven't seen too much out of the button. he has low stats but over 2 orbits that doens't mean very much.

Re: PP 5/10: KK capped preflop. what to do against a sudden turn raise.
You NEVER EVER EVER EVER limp KK preflop ESPECIALLY if teh table is tight and you let marginal hands see a cheap flop. Not only is your hand undefined but you are more prone to make mistakes which I am sure you did. Change tables if it's too tight, don't start trying to generate action. I would just call down and hope I'm against AQc. If the six or nine pair on the river I am tempted to bet/call the river.

Re: PP 5/10: KK capped preflop. what to do against a sudden turn raise
for what it's worth, there was also a fair amount of raising going on at the table and i felt reasonably certain that i'd be raised if i limped (table pre-flop raise 12%). this is also a play that i never really do, but i'd already had a couple really good hands (AA,etc.) and i figured i'd mix it up. still i think you've got a good point. the thing i was really wondering about here was what, given the possible range of hands he would raise with on the turn, i should do on the turn. i think that if he'd had AQ he'd have raised on the flop in order to define his hand against me, the pre-flop limp-capper. the play i a pulled almost invariably does define my hand as KK or AA and therefore waiting to raise with AQ would be a really weak play. i actually thought he either had made a set of Jacks already had a set of queens or had KK (of which there is only one) or AA.

if you're ever going to mix it up in a 5/10 game with KK, don't start by limping utg. this is just disaster waiting to happen.

Re: PP 5/10: KK capped preflop. what to do against a sudden turn raise
Please ignore anyone who says not to ever limp with AA or KK up front, they are probably relatively new to poker. Given your read of the table, limping with AA or KK early is the right play. Also the turn is tough, but you may have up to 6 live outs, and theres still a small percentage of time you have the best hand also, I think you must call.

eh, whatever. i was unsure it about it when i did it. figured i should try one of those plays they tell you to do every so often, in the books.
and that's what i did. he had AA. |

well, i looked it up:
"you may also occasionally limp with AA or KK. the time to do this would be when your early position raises are not getting any callers" -HOLD'EM POKER FOR ADVANCED PLAYERS by sklansky and malmouth pg. 22. |
