A set of nines -- a good time to just call?
After enduring a few orbits with players who were tighter than my own sLA-A self, some turnover had taken place, and I was starting to like the table.
UTG, however, is a rockish TAG. Party Poker 3/6 Hold'em (10 handed) converter Preflop: Hero is MP3 with 9[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 9[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]. CO posts a blind of $3. <font color="#CC3333">UTG raises</font>, <font color="#666666">1 fold</font>, UTG+2 calls, <font color="#666666">2 folds</font>, Hero calls, CO (poster) calls, <font color="#666666">1 fold</font>, SB calls, <font color="#666666">1 fold</font>. Flop: (11 SB) 5[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 3[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 9[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] <font color="#0000FF">(5 players)</font> SB checks, <font color="#CC3333">UTG bets</font>, UTG+2 calls, Hero calls . . . All right. Let's stop here. Should I just raise? I know this is a stupid "should I slowplay?" question, but during the session I felt like I was getting great cards but wasn't maximizing. |

I think on that board it's fine. UTG will almost certainly bet any turn and guy stuck in between is screwed.

I dont think I cold call here, against that sort of opponant certainly not.
I think this is an ideal opportunity for a slowplay. |

Re: A set of nines -- a good time to just call?
if UTG is indeed a rockish TAG, there is a pretty decent chance he has an overpair and will 3bet. If his UTG raising range is AQ, AK, TT-AA, then there are 30 combos of overpairs and 32 combos of AQ/AK. If he 3bets there is a good chance the middle dude will call still, and you can call the 3bet and raise the turn. Also, if he is a rock there is a good chance he checks Ak/AQ on the turn after getting 2 flop callers (3 if sb calls which is fairly likely). I think you should raise this flop.

I'd likely just raise here.
What do you think the chances are that UTG bets into you again on the turn anyway or 3-bets the flop and leads the turn? |

I don't like the coldcall preflop.
I would wait until the turn to raise. A rockish TAG may slow down when you coldcall preflop, and suddenly like that flop. |

Re: A set of nines -- a good time to just call?
I don't like the cold call pre-flop v a UTG rock. I think you should 2 bet this flop, if rock has AA-QQ he proly 3 bets. Also, much more likely that player in CO will call 2 cold on the flop rather than the turn. As a rule of thumb I don't slow play at 3-6, IMO.

Re: A set of nines -- a good time to just call?
I'm raising the flop and hoping that UTG has AA, KK, or QQ and three bets me. If he does, and UTG+2 sticks around, I think I'm going to cap the flop. If UTG+2 folds to UTG's flop 3-bet, I'll smooth call and pop UTG on the turn.

Re: A set of nines -- a good time to just call?
Point to consider:
there is no guarantee that UTG will continue to bet the turn, and there's no guarantee that UTG+2 will call if he does. Therefore, raising now and trapping UTG and UTG+2 will earn you at least one more big bet - the equivalant to successfully waiting till the turn to raise UTG. Moreover, by raising the flop you may get lucky and have UTG 3-bet you. Jack up this pot. (Raising is the new slowplay). Adam |
