wouldn't you always want the ball second?? [/ QUOTE ] most times yes, but i can think of a scenario where i would want my offense out first. lets say you had a 21 point lead going into the 4th, and your defense has been on the field for the entire 4th quarter because your offense is incompetent and coughed up the ball 2 times on the first play. in this case, you would want your offense out there first to give the D a rest. |

Re: College OT Strategy
What was bizarre is that LSU won the toss, said "we defer" (!) and then Alabama took the ball (!)
Misplayed on every street. |

Re: College OT Strategy
When they say they deferred, they meant they'd take the ball second. When you defer the opening coin toss, you just take the ball in the second half, so the same terminology in overtime means that you play offense second.

I think "defer" means you PICK second. So in regulation, if I defer, it means you pick for the first half (and almost certainly take the ball) and I pick for the second (and almost certainly take the ball). Oklahoma kicked off to start both halves once this year. |
