Best way to learn a game?
What is the best way of learning how to play a new type of poker? I usually play NL HE (Ring, SNG, MTT) and occasional Limit ring, but I would like to learn how to play other games. (Omaha, Omaha/8, Stud, Stud/8, Stud Razz, Lowball, etc...)
What's the best way to learn? |

Re: Best way to learn a game?
Get familiar with general poker theory and basic concepts and try and work out how they apply in different games. Certain ideas from holdem will be tranferable, but with modification. Sadly to check these ideas out, you have to play and learn the hard way.

Re: Best way to learn a game?
i recently started to branch out into some other games. if you play hold'em then making the step to omaha hi is pretty easy. then you can start to get a feel for omaha hi/lo after that. omaha and hold'em are variations of the same game, so you should be able to jump in and at least keep your head above water.
stud is a totally different animal, but i think it's a lot of fun. if i play anything other than hold'em its 7CS. go over to the stud forum and look around. you'll pick up some strategy pretty quick. |

Re: Best way to learn a game?
Try playing hands against yourself. When I started playing Hold'em, I must have spent days just shuffling cards and dealing one hand. Recently, I did the same thing for Omaha - seems to have worked.
You develop a sense of what works, what doesn't and an intuitive sense of what an "average" hand looks like. And you practice the routine of the game. After that, it's just a question of playing the game for real... |

I agree with the poster who mentioned understanding general poker theory first. Read TOP. Read it again, and then start to venture into new games. The ideas are very similar, and you'll recognize many bridges linking the different games that will give you an instant edge over your opponents. Ultimately, there is still no substitute for playing hands. Books and these forums are of infinite value as well. I also recommend switching to PLO High, and then moving to O8. You can then branch to stud, razz, etc. from there. |
