Re: what is meant by metagame?
I am not 100% sure on this one, but I think I can wager a guess. In general terms, poker involves reading hands, calculating pot odds, and some bluffing strategy to play optimally. I think the metagame is the game at the next level and beyond where you try to figure out your opponents' strategies and make better decisions based on how you have seen your opponents play. Another part of the metagame is the assumption that your opponents are also trying to figure out your strategy, so you might occasionally make strange plays in order to cause them to evaluate you incorrectly, or make a play contrary to your perceived inmage because you feel it will bemore likely to work.
For instance, if you have been playing very tight and end up without much hand in a medium sized pot, you might make a well timed bluff and your have your opponents fold better hands due to your solid image. Likewise, if you have been playing very loose and aggressively, you can bet the nuts very hard and may get paid off due to your perceived reckless nature. I think these considerations are only useful when playing against thinking opponents. |
