Default Apparently you can play poker online for money

...I'd almost forgotten after taking about a 2-week hiatus to focus on game improvement. Anyway, my first night back I was confronted with this hand, the type of hand I used to call down with routinely, but that I want to put a little more thought into now.

Villain is pretty fishy (56/10/2.3 postflop).

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ Hero (6 max, 6 handed) converter

saw flop|saw showdown

SB ($613)
Hero ($466.80)
UTG ($370.70)
MP ($209)
CO ($187)
Button ($323.80)

Preflop: Hero is BB with 5[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], J[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]. SB posts a blind of $2.
1 fold, MP calls $4, 2 folds, SB (poster) completes, Hero checks.

Flop: ($12) 3[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 4[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], J[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (3 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $11, MP folds, SB calls $11.

Turn: ($34) 5[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $30, SB calls $30.

River: ($94) 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $60, SB calls $568 (All-In), Hero ???

Those stats are pretty LAG. And his line doesn't make any sense. If he really had a good hand, he should be betting it somewhere. The river for sure if not before because there is such a good chance that you will check behind on the river. This looks a TON like a busted straight draw. I say call.

im still looking for the straight draw that missed...

without a strong read, i think im folding. the limp/call/call/push line from a full stack is very confusing but there is a 3 straight on board and he could very possible have oddly played a set of 4s, thought a turn raise would scare you because of the 3-straight and then tried to catch up for lost time. 76 isnt impossible. you're really only beating a complete bluff and a terribly overplayed 43.

i always remember the advice to never give a bad player credit, so saying his line makes no sense for a good hand doesnt mean he doesnt have one. if he was pushing with nothing, he's going to show. then he's going to get cocky and do it again in a bad spot. if not, you saved yourself calling an overbet.

I don't understand how you don't see that 56/52 makes a missed straight draw and how you advocate 'check/calling' when OP has position on his opponent.

56 and 25 both missed their open enders.

complete bluff and a terribly overplayed 43.

And a terribly overplayed J3, J4, or 45.

OP describes the Villian as "fishy," but doesn't explain HOW he's fishy.

Calling station? Frequent bluffer? Just bad judgement?

If it's the first one, you can easily fold.
If its the second one, you can easily call.
If it's the thrid one... throw a dart at a dart board, and call if you hit a prime number or a perfect square.

Without a decent read, I think this is a fold. If he shows you a bluff say "nh" and put him on your buddy list.

Oops. Didn't see PT numbers.

Throw a dart at a dart board, but now call if you hit any even number or prime number. Fold if you hit the bullseye or triple twenty or double seventeen, though.

All the low numbers are primes. Maybe this would work for people that just suck at darts.

Oh, and if you miss the board completely, then you should roll two die and call if you roll a 6 or higher.

for what it's worth, since he has decent postflop aggression numbers, i think check/calling the river is a better play. he's very likely to take a stab and it takes the guesswork out.

sincerely,
the monday morning quarterback who never would have actually checked the river, but simply wishes he had in hindsight
