Ed Miller Changed My Life
This is one of the first hands I've played since starting poker last month that I'm knew WHY I was doing what I was doing, and that I know I played more or less correctly! Thanks, Ed!!
Party Poker 0.50/1 Hold'em (8 handed) Preflop: Hero is CO with 7[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]. UTG+1 posts a blind of $0.50. UTG calls, UTG+1 (poster) checks, MP1 folds, MP2 calls, Hero calls, Button folds, SB completes, BB checks. Before I read Ed I'd have folded this pre-flop, figuring "this never holds up enough to be worth it." here I knew it was a slightly out-of-position call, but the way the table was running honestly believed everyone would stay in. Flop: (6 SB) 9[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], Q[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 6[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (6 players) SB checks, BB checks, UTG checks, UTG+1 checks, MP2 checks, Hero bets, SB folds, BB folds, UTG folds, UTG+1 calls, MP2 calls. I figure I'll get at least 3 callers, I have 8 outs, which is 4.2-1, so betting here is the right move. Turn: (4.50 BB) A[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (3 players) UTG+1 checks, MP2 checks, Hero bets, UTG+1 calls, MP2 calls. There's $4.5 in the pot, and I have 4.1-1 to hit the hand, so in goes another dollar. River: (7.50 BB) 5[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (3 players) UTG+1 checks, MP2 checks, Hero bets, UTG+1 folds, MP2 calls. Final Pot: 9.50 BB Main Pot: 9.50 BB, between MP2 and Hero. > Pot won by Hero (9.50 BB). It didn't even matter that i won . .. i knew I could lose .. but I knew I played the odds right. Results below: MP2 has 2c Ac (one pair, aces). Hero has 7s 8s (straight, nine high). Outcome: Hero wins 9.50 BB. |

Re: Ed Miller Changed My Life
Hi kopefire,
That is a good hand. I would have been tempted to check behind on the turn, but I think your bet is good because the Ace will scare out both players if they flopped smaller than top pair. |

Re: Ed Miller Changed My Life
i like the turn bet as well, because if you check and he doesn't bet you lose money, and if he bets you're going to call anyway.

Re: Ed Miller Changed My Life
actually if hero is behind here, he loses money on each additional dollar that goes in...it's the amount already in the pot that makes it ok to call. I do agree, however, that this is a good semi bluff.

Re: Ed Miller Changed My Life
for this particular hand he would lose money if he didn't have the best hand, but not putting your money in when you have hte best of it is losing, whether you win the hand or not.
looks to me like he had the best of it the whole way. |

Re: Ed Miller Changed My Life
you are incorrect, the bet on the flop is correct as you are getting better then 4-1 odds with two cards to come and you can expect a lot of callers, however the turn bet is not a bet for value, there are only 3 people in the pot, for the bet on the turn to be profitable there has to be atleast 4 callers to break even because you are a 4-1 dog to make your hand by the river. it is a good semi bluff however, and the hero should be hoping that everyone folds, i think i would check the turn in this situation as i will lose the least if my hand doesnt hit and might still get a free showdown or can bluff at the end.
edit: just noticed other people already made this response.. sorry for repeating |

Re: Ed Miller Changed My Life
Considering he was up against a party moron. The bluff might not work. Ace 2 suited is total crap that is only to be played in very late or small blind. But since it's Party its call anywhere and chase it down............

Re: Ed Miller Changed My Life
He didn't have the best of it thoug on the turn. His opponent had a pair of aces on the turn, his bet technically lost him money. However the odds his opponent didn't have an A were decent and the scare card makes it likely 1 or both opponents would fold.

Re: Ed Miller Changed My Life
Your logic on the turn is flawed.
You're 4.1 against to hit on the river, in order to bet this for value you need to be getting better return on your bet than 4.1:1 - so you need at least 5 callers on the turn. You're getting calling based on pot odds, and value betting based on a draw confused. I check the turn here. Perhaps I've had it all wrong all along (I quit poker if I do! ), but it's a common concept that a lot of new players mix up. |

But he has something in the way of implied odds to make up for it.. I don't think it's enough though, I'd definately check that turn. |
