Re: Bet the river or check behind?
i would check behind, im also not crazy about the turn raise...depending on the player and whether or not he would choose to c/r with an 8. but when he bets out on the turn i would be in call down mode.

Re: Bet the river or check behind?
If this guy really had an 8 why didn't he go for the check/raise on the turn.
This is a bad river card for the made flush draw. Any other card than a diamond I'm betting. Here I think it's close and needs to be upon the player. If no read I would bet and make a calling call if he check/raises. I just feel he would either go for a check/raise on the turn if he had a 8 or he would bet out on the river with an 8 since he probably doesn't put you on a 8. |

im also not crazy about the turn raise... [/ QUOTE ] Hey thirddan... I used to have this same approach and would call-down if they bet the turn. But with the top-card pairing, this is sometimes a semi-bluff with the flush draw, sometimes a naked bluff, and yeah, sometimes trips. I think the raise is essential here, unless you have a good read. You'll get to charge double the times their draw doesn't make it, and if you can fold if three-bet costs the same as calling down to see his 8. |

Re: Bet the river or check behind?
I bet the river, he called. He had an 8.
Thank you sir. I an see merits of checking here also - if it is a semi-bluff, the flush made it. I like to say I could consider folding to a check-raise, but if it is the right play I'm not that good. |

Meh no problems. He misplayed his hand, should have either check/raised the turn.

Re: Bet the river or check behind?
i think this is player dependent, and since there was no read that this player was tricky, i usually don't give a player credit for making this kind of raise as a semi-bluff. I think a typical player will check top pair to the preflop raiser, but when he makes trips on the turn he realizes that he can beat your big pair and leads at you. Better players would probably c/r the turn, but this is not who you are dealing with most of the time. Another thing a player might do is just call your turn raise and c/r you on the river, much less common but still something to consider.
