Default A $600 Blurting Error

$10-25 PLHE 4-handed. Button straddles for $50 each hand. My opponent is short-stacked at around $1600. An hour before he told a cool story about a guy showing off in one of the casinos. The guy bet $30,000 into a $3,000 pot in a pot limit game. His opponent called and busted him. The guy protested that his bet was more than the pot and so had to be reduced to the pot. The floorman ruled (apparently correctly) that the bet stood IF the opponent wanted it too. Overbetting the pot gave the opponent the option to call or to have the bet reduced to the pot size.

An hour passes. Opponent straddles for $50. I complete from the big blind with J4s. Don't try this at home. He checks the straddle option. Heads up.

Flop is KJ4. Bottom two. I bet $75. He raises to $200. I decide he's bluffing and call. Turn is an ace. There's now a flush draw out. I check. He says "all in." He has about $1100 and change.

In one of my finer stupid moments, I immediately say he can't do that. He amends his bet to $510. Decision time. I had decided he was bluffing on the flop and called to check the turn to him, but the ace presented a problem. Did he hit? I decide not and put him all in. He promptly folds.

All I had to do was shut up and call his all in bet to make $600 more. I gave up a $600 freeroll. It's not like I wasn't told the rule just an hour ago. Sigh.

Later, he called my $800 river bluff after a $300 turn raise to set up the river takedown with AQ on a board of AJ884. Nicely done and he's ahead over the two hands.

I'm pretty sure he reads here and gets a free line on my play. Phil if you're out there, fess up. ;-)
