2 poker termonology questions from a new player
Hey I've only been playing poker for a couple of months read a book, lots of articles and lots on these forums.
I'm doing fairly well I'd say. Winning at about 5.29 BB per 100 hands at 1/2 fixed ring game according to my PT (5000 hands). I guess I know the general meaning of the two terms, but would like to have it spelled out so to speak: 1: LAG 2: sandbagging a hand Thanks in advance. |

Re: 2 poker termonology questions from a new player
A LAG is an overly Loose AGgressive player. They often play many hands and raise with a wide range of them.
Soundbagging is the same as slowplaying which essentially means to hold off raising/betting with good hand until a later betting round (or a later opportunity in the current betting round - like with a preflop limp-reraise or postflop with a checkraise). Among some people, sandbagging carries a negative connotation. Here's a great site that has an extensive "poker dictionary": Poker Dictionary Luke |

Re: 2 poker termonology questions from a new player
I had trouble with some of the termonology when I first got to this site as well so I created a running thread that has addressed most questions surrounding the use of different termonology. I hope this helps...

Nice dictionary! I'm surprised my handle isn't in it, given the volume of antiquated terms defined... Although, half of its compound etymology is there.

Sandbagging is not used for slowplaying but is another term for checkraising!

Re: 2 poker termonology questions from a new player
Sandbagging was originally used in draw poker, where you can check on the pre-draw round and then check-raise. That is, it's not like stud, lowball, or hold-em where, you either must call, raise or fold. When a player would check, and then raise the opener, this was called sandbagging.
So check-raising is the literal meaning of sandbagging. Since the demise of draw, the term has generally been used for trapping or confusing another player when you have a good hand. When someone says, "he sandbagged me," he means he made me think he hadn't much but actually had a big hand, usually, but not necessarily, using the check-raise. |
