Gift Card is Burning a hole in my Pocket
Here's what I got and basically the order I've read them in:
Winning Low Limit Hold 'Em - Jones More Hold 'Em Excellent - Krieger Complete Book of Hold 'Em - Carson Hold Em Poker - Sklansky Theory of Poker - Sklansky Hold 'Em Poker for Advanced Players (21st ed.) - Sklansky Tournament Poker for Advanced Players - Sklansky Super/System - Brunson, et.al. No-limit/Pot-Limit Poker - Ciaffone/Reuben Poker Essays volumes I,II and III Championship Satellite Strategy - McEvoy/Daugherty I have a $50 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble. I'm leaning towards Gambling Theory and Other Topics by Maason and Inside the Poker Mind by Feeney. I thought about Improve Your Poker by Ciaffone, but I can't order that from BN. Anyone have any other suggestions/recommendations/comments? PS: I'm mainly interested in Hold 'Em or generaly theory type books. I also have Positively Fifth Street by McManus, so if there are any good Fiction type poker books you'd recommend throw this in as well. TIA! |

Re: Gift Card is Burning a hole in my Pocket
I just got Doyle Brunson's "Poker Wisdom of a Champion" (formerly titled According to Doyle) for Christmas. It's not a strategy book, but a collection Doyle's autobiographic tales of the good 'ole poker days in Texas. Each story is only 2-3 pages long, so it makes for easy reading. I've already finished reading it (47 stories in all), and I loved it. Well worth the $14.95.
But the best non-strategy poker book I've read was Anthony Holden's "Big Deal". Truly a great book. |

Get Feeney's book. Its tremendous if you really understand the other books you've read.

I agree.... Doyle's book is a great read. I read it at work when I wasn't on Party. I love the story about the guy who pretends his dog is sick....

Re: Gift Card is Burning a hole in my Pocket
I have the Feeney one (Inside The Poker Mind) as well, nice read, need to reread, I think stopped at 75% done, but it is a bunch of essay so I don't care if the hero dies at the end.
Try Tao of Poker by Larry Phillips, only $10, great one for bathroom stops or just on the road, has 285 rules to live by relating to Poker, just basically listed one after the other for 246 pages (not huge pages mind you). [edit: Also, it's a much better book and sequel to his Zen book] Skip Poker Tournament Tips from the Pros by Shane Smith, $20, aint worth it. <I have it sitting here, don't know why I spent that much on such a small book, would rather have bought Phil's book and ate lunch with the leftover funds: hindsite...> -t |
