Default Surely, This Is Wrong

The following is ante stealing advice from Nolan Dalla at Seven Card Stud. It comes from a poker pages article.

[ QUOTE ]
Some betting structures make it necessary to play aggressively on third street, frequently trying to steal the pot with the first raise. This occurs specifically in structures where the first raise is relatively low in proportion to the size of the pot (the sum total of antes and the forced bet). These are usually higher-limit games. By playing aggressively early in the hand, the initial raiser wins more money when his ante steal succeeds. He also wins more when his raise is called and his hand improves, or he catches scare cards that may win the pot later. The downside is that monetary fluctuations are more severe in these games.

[/ QUOTE ]

Surely, he would be less likely to take the antes as players would not be in too bad a shape when calling.

Hi,

Sounds about right too me! Although getting too aggressive early up front in a FULL game can be problematic, most games that this applies too ( bigger games ) are rarely 8 handed. ( although depending on game conditions, stealing early with a full game can actually be more profitable )

well, if he assumes people will not adjust to the new structure, sure.

in reality this does not happen very often.

His statements and your statement are both right.

When there's a lot to be stolen, it makes sense to go after it.
Likewise, it makes sense to try not to have it stolen from you.

This forces you to apply more poker skills and dance the finer lines at higher ante structures, instead of just waiting like a rock for the biggest hands as at low limit/low ante structures.

YOu are both right. Mostly when the betting structure is good for stealing, the one who is forced to bet, gets good odds for calling. If you are interested in this, read the latest article of Grant Strauss on this topic:
