Just made the money and then get a problem hand.
Hey guys, I was playing in a $26 multi at Full Tilt last night and had a hand that I really don't know if I played right or not. Here is the situation. 716 entered and I had just gotten to the money at 72. I am about $9000 on the button. Blinds are 300/600 and an ante. The table had been fairly tight, but you have to take into consideration this was before the money started. I get AT and decide to raise to 1500 and the BB calls. BB has got around 30k. Flop comes QJ4. He checks and I decide to take a free card since I have a draw now. Plus I think its likely he may be slowplaying a Q or J. Turn comes A. He checks, I bet half the pot and he reraises all-in. Before I let you guys know the rest I am curious to your anaylsis.

Re: Just made the money and then get a problem hand.
I like to sometimes look at times I have been in the BB in this spot and how I may have chosen to play my hands.
If I have a read on you at all and it tells me you will have Ax in this spot 50% or more of the time, Then I will call as the BB did here with AJ or better, and PP's, as well as suited paints and J10s, Q10s, sometimes K10s. Given my stack of 30k I cant be too far behind in alot of these spots and somewhat ahead in others to be able to make the preflop call and be able to make a nice winner out of the hand, without also being crippled if I lose it. So, if I have AQ, AJ, QJ or K10 or a set in this spot and often times AK also, I'm going to check-raise your ass all-in on the turnexpecting a call better than 50% of the time and winning 80% of those. Why did I exclude A10 but include K10 in my calls? A10 can be way way behind and cost me a ton whereas K10 can trap you much easier and I personally get away from it without hitting the flop real hard. A10 just seems to make me bend over and get pounded ! |

Re: Just made the money and then get a problem hand.
Small raise by Button.
If I'm BB and I have AK/AQ, and a pocket pair 10 and higher (this is what is important in this case), I re-raise pre-flop. AA and KK could trap. ON the flop : He checks, I think that 50% I check and 50% I do a CB. On the turn : Check - Bet 1500 (a little low but it is fine) - CR all-in. What can he have : Once thing is sure, it's that he doesn't have air. AK would have raised before the flop. AQ would have raised before the flop. AJ He could have that. (Well played) A10 He could have that. (Well played) KQ - He could have that. ( ? - not sure if this would be a good play or not - maybe not) KJ - He could have that. ( ? - not sure if this would be a good play or not - maybe not) K10 - He has the nuts, he wants a call, no way he is doing that. QJ - He could have that. (Nicely played) Q10 - He could have that. (Oddly played) Overall, you beat almost as many hands as you are beaten. But the Pot = almost 6500 + his all-in 6000 = 12500. It cost you 6000 to call. You have better than 2:1 odds, so I would call. |

Re: Just made the money and then get a problem hand.
Well, I really thought the guy could have been playing any ace or could be holding a Q or J. So I called. He turns over A4. It left me with some outs but I didn't catch. I think I played it right but I can say the same for him, even though calling with A4 is pretty loose there.
