Re: What the hell...
Effective odds are the total you expect to win through the end of the hand divided by all the bets you will have to call to win the hand.
Implied odds are the total amount you expect to win through the end of the hand divided just by the amount you have to call on that street. So, effective odds are more conservative. As far as when to use effective odds--I don't see any examples in my books. Maybe someone else can answer that. |

[/ QUOTE ] I think would be plain old pot odds. Effective odds takes into account bets you will have to pay later. Here's an example: It's heads-up on the turn with 4BB in the pot. You have middle pair (with no draws) and your opponents bets into you. You are getting 5:1 pot odds on your call. You might think "well, I can call as long as I'm ahead more than 1/6th of the time." However, suppose you know your opponent will bet the river no matter what. Now you are going to have to call 2 bets to see if your hand is best. So, your effective odds are 6:2 or 3:1. So, your hand really needs to be best 1/4th of the time, which is more than 1/6. Does that make sense? |

Re: What the hell...
Thanks Goober. I actually understood your explanation. I am new and have only incorporated the regular pot odds into my play. Having an understanding of the other types of computations used should help me improve a bit.
