Default Pulling the string

Playing 40-80 at the Commerce, I'm dealt [img]/forums/images/icons/club.gif[/img] A [img]/forums/images/icons/club.gif[/img] 9 UTG. I limp, player on left limps and MP raises. Button calls
(old man who is pretty loose), and I call. Four of us see:

[img]/forums/images/icons/spade.gif[/img] Q [img]/forums/images/icons/diamond.gif[/img] 9 [img]/forums/images/icons/heart.gif[/img] 5.

I check, and it's checked to the button who bets. I pulled four chips from my stack, and then I notice this is an obvious check-raise. So four chips went in. I started to reach back for
four more chips and realized it was a string bet. Would you have tried to make this "string raise?"

Results to follow later.

hi mike
i've read your post, but i'm not sure i follow you here. does the card room allow string bets or raises? also, this may not be an obvious. the worst possible card for the top card on board is the Q in this situation. you might get a K weak kicker to fold, but the Q here mike....whew.

if the button likes to bet when checked to, and you have recently run a successful check-raise, then if you are allowed to, no problem here. just raise any way you can. just hold those chips up and say,"this proves that i'm not the penny pinching miser everyone says i am. in your face!" wham....like that."i'm making a generous contribution" follow through. and wiggle. if you have long hair close your eyes and shake your head, go "blah" like that. and throw some inside air punches while wiggling. is as effective, if not more so, than a string bet.

Default Results--and why I shouldn\'t play poker

There were still four of us on the flop. The turn was:

[img]/forums/images/icons/spade.gif[/img] Q [img]/forums/images/icons/diamond.gif[/img] 9 [img]/forums/images/icons/heart.gif[/img] 5 [img]/forums/images/icons/club.gif[/img] 10.

Checked to the button who bets. All call. River was:

[img]/forums/images/icons/spade.gif[/img] Q [img]/forums/images/icons/diamond.gif[/img] 9 [img]/forums/images/icons/heart.gif[/img] 5 [img]/forums/images/icons/club.gif[/img] 10 [img]/forums/images/icons/heart.gif[/img] 3.

Checked around. Button had 52o, player on my left had AK, and MP had [img]/forums/images/icons/diamond.gif[/img] K [img]/forums/images/icons/diamond.gif[/img] 10.

If only I had checkraised on the flop. So that's it for poker. Baseball and playoffs much easier.

i dont think it's an obvious checkraise. i think the chances the button has a Q, plus the fact you want AK, AJ, 88, etc, to stick around, not fold, makes this just a call.

you wouldnt catch me limping utg w/ A9s in that game btw given all the preflop raising that usually goes on. oftentimes 3 bets to see the flop still right?

i cant imagine why you called the turn. i wouldve put button on JT and have decided that if i wasnt beat on the flop i was now beat for sure on the turn.

if turn had blanked under 9 that wouldve been the time for your checkraise.

play lower limit games that provide you with more predictable marks.

I agree with Mike here. Calling the flop is ok, but calling it to the river is a mistake. You have to put one of the players on a Q or T at least.

Default Question for you Mike...

same game...you're in MP with the same hand that our hero limped in with, would you open-raise or fold?

just curious...

eh mike
stop feeling sorry for yourself. my past week has demolished the bank-roll it took two weeks to build. i'm minus 900 bucks. i was ahead 2500 or so. but the cards have been just awful. i was a little loose for a while there, but i'm playing well and i'm losing. it won't continue like this, it'll turn around, but right now i feel like a loser. whatever my starters are, the flop is exactly the opposite. when i hit my set, it's beaten by a flush or higher set. just on and on and on. but, that's why there aren't many consistant winners. times like these just seem to go on and on and they give up. the people who try, not the times like these. no, times like these never seem to give up, they just go away temporarily. and no this post isn't grammatically correct. why should it be. the cards aren't coming and neither are the words, correctly just like the cards.

well, i busted out after only two crummy hours. i'm limiting my daily losses to 400 bucks until i start hitting again. tommorow is another day.
