My opponent is on a bigger flush draw - my line???
Live $6/$12 game. Play along with me. I want some ideas on how I could have taken this pot away from my opponent. I often find myself in such situations.
I post in MP2 and am dealt 7 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]5 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 1 limpers, I check, 1 more limper, SB folds and BB checks Flop is 3 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]3 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]9 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] Villain bets, I raise, others fold and it's headsup to the turn. I am almost positive that Villain is on a flush draw. He had bet his flush draws on a couple of previous occasions, and I picked up a tell from his reaction to my raise that led me to believe that he has a higher flush draw. Still, the pot is now decent sized and I think it's worth fighting for. Villain is loose and fishy preflop, average postflop. The line that I ultimately took didn't work because he called me down with a King high The final board was 3 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]3 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]9 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] Blank A [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] How could I have manipulated the betting on the turn and river to try to win this pot? |

Re: My opponent is on a bigger flush draw - my line???
Sup Drew,
If you have a very strong read that your opponent has a flush draw, AND (this is a very important and) you are confident that your opponent will fold a missed draw high card hand on the river following CONSTANT aggression, then the line is clearly to bet the turn and bet the river (though probably check the river if you make a pair). The idea is now that you are simply drawing AGAINST his flush. WHATEVER YOU DO: DON'T check the turn and try to take the pot down on the river. Your opponent will bluff the river or try to snap of a bluff VERY often. I sincerely hope this was not the line you took. If you are confident enough in your read (which I think you can be online though I am NOT advocating this for online play), then you need to completely convince your opponent he has a real hand, and checking the turn does not do this. |
