Against who?

Usually I'd raise again.

If it were heads up I might just call.

I was new to the table, didn't have a read.

Suppose our hero raises again, villain calls, and checks the river. Do we take the free showdown or bet?

Yea I'm raising here. If he hit his straight, I would expect a c/r especially into the person who raised him on the flop.

Edit: I would bet the river if it happened like you said, assuming of course it's a safe card. With that play I would think he hit a pair with his straight draw.

Bet.

If he had you beat he would likely raise the turn or stop and go again on the river.

so here's what happened,

Turn: (8.50 BB) 6[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (3 players)
SB checks, UTG+1 bets, Hero raises, SB folds, UTG+1 calls.

River: (12.50 BB) J[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (2 players)
UTG+1 checks, Hero bets, UTG+1 calls.

Final Pot: 14.50 BB.

Was that line reasonable?

Reasonable line, but that is the scariest possible river card here. Usually a board pairing isn't, but his play smacked of having top pair (the turn wouldn't complete any likely straight draws you'd raise with) so it looked like he had a Jack, but your line is the right one.

I think with that river I check behind. What would he have bet on the flop and the turn that didn't get there? I guess he could have been betting second pair if he put you on the draw, but I don't like that J one bit.

The way it played out it smells like UTG+1 had 98 but that J [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] on the river would scare the bejesus out of me and I would check the river.
