Default How do shot outs work

i busted two people there were 4 left i had both covered i had aqs another guy had kk and another had t3 i busted both but the guy with kk that i had coivered got his money is that to ensure that there are 3 places

whoever has more chips starting the hand gets credit for the higher place.

thats not the question i had more chips then both so both should have been knocked out but one of them still has chips even though i had him covered and beat him, i havent seen in the entire shoot out a table that only has 2 in it could it be they give him back the chips and in the next round add the chips to my stack cuz mysteriously at the end of each round ive gotten a couple thousand more chips in my stack is that maybe for getting 1st every time does 2nd get a different amount ?
