Default 16 NL teams,,,,,14 AL teams

What was the point for the brewers to switch leagues?

I see no reason to have 16 and 14.

They switched to make the leagues numbers even.

I'm lazy so I will post from an online encyclopedia:

"The team was moved from the American League to the National League in 1998 during baseball's realignment in order to make sure that each league had an even number of teams. Major League Baseball wished to keep interleague play in designated blocks during the season. Making both leagues equal in size would have meant that each league would have 15 teams, an odd number. In turn, this would have required that single interleague games be scattered throughout the season. Therefore, it was decided to have a 16-team National League and a 14-team American League."

15/15 would mean either you'd have to have interleague play all year or someone would always be off. Scheduling would be a nightmare.

It amazes me that the NL central can have 6 teams and the AL West can have only 4. I can't believe the NL Central owners actually let that happen. They must be retarded.

Don't be a moran. How would you make a schedule with an odd number of teams? Interleague all year long? Big headache.

How else can you possibly balance a 16/14 split three ways without having the numbers how they are now?

I think the setup now is fine. The AL West has both been the strongest division and the weakest division in the AL over the last 10+ years, and now the NL West is showing a 5 team division can be absolutely awful too.

Wow, you would think they would have thought about this before expanding to 30 teams.

Yes I would love to be a fan of a team in the NL Central where 1/6 will make the playoffs and see that the AL West has only 4 teams and 1/4 make the playoffs. It is retarded. The fact that the NLC owners are losing all that playoff money cause they will go to the playoffs 1/3 of the time fewer than the ALW teams show they are retarded to accept that deal.

This is a very simplistic way of looking at it. Look at the teams in the NL Central and look at the teams in the AL West. The Cards and Cubs know that they are guaranteed to have a decent win rate against division opponents (whom they play more often) simply by virtue of not being horrible. No such luxury in the AL West.

It is, however, a correct way of looking at it. More teams ultimately and necessarily means it's more difficult to win your division.

It is much tougher to win the NL central than it is to win the AL West.
