You have no idea how ugly this is gonna get.
If CMS (Center for Medicare Services, nee HCFA) starts to really look at the EV of the drugs we use, the whole system will get turned on its head. For example, I now use two different drugs in my office to treat macular degeneration. One of them costs $1295 a dose and is given every 3 months. The other costs $995 a dose and is given every 6 weeks. So we're looking at spending $5000-$8000 per patient and the treatments don't even work very well. Compare that to the cost of generic Xanax which is probably pennies per year that they just decided not to cover. Yikes. |
