Default 2 Hands / 1 Question

Question 1
How do you guys generally play middle/bottom pair on the flop? If I'm early to act I just check and if I have proper odds to try to make trips/2pair Ill call. If I'm 2nd or last to act I usually bet out if its checked to me. Any suggestions on playing this way? Thanks

Hand 1

PokerStars 0.05/0.10 Hold'em (10 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is MP1 with K[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], K[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img].
UTG calls, 1 fold, UTG+2 calls, Hero raises, 2 folds, CO 3-bets, 1 fold, SB calls, 1 fold, UTG calls, UTG+2 calls, Hero caps, CO calls, SB calls, UTG calls, UTG+2 calls.

Flop: (21 SB) 4[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 5[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 4[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (5 players)
SB checks, UTG checks, UTG+2 checks, Hero bets, CO calls, SB folds, UTG calls, UTG+2 calls.

Turn: (12.50 BB) A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (4 players)
UTG checks, UTG+2 bets, Hero folds, CO calls, UTG folds.

River: (14.50 BB) T[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)
UTG+2 bets, CO calls.

Final Pot: 16.50 BB

I wasn't sure what to do on the flop, I dont think I could of done anything to protect my hand because the pot was so large, so I just bet out after it was checked to me. On the turn when the checker came alive when the ace hit I figured I was done with, so I just folded. Would it be worth it to call the turn and call a bet on the river?

Hand 2

SB bets, Hero raises, SB 3-bets, Hero calls.

Turn: (5.50 BB) 5[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (2 players)
SB bets, Hero calls.

River: (7.50 BB) J[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (2 players)
SB bets, Hero calls.

Final Pot: 9.50 BB

I felt I got way too passive when he 3 bet on the flop with 3 cards to a straight on board. What should I have done differently?

Hand 1: It was checked to you in late position on the flop. There's no way to protect. Just bet for value. On the turn, marginal fold. A read is helpful here. If he likes Ax and typically bets out when he has a hand like this, then it's ok (especially since the A probably didn't open anybody up to draws that might donk bet you). It's rarely incorrect to fold something like KK in this situation. I'd probably call down, personally.

Hand 2 is fine.

As for your other question, it depends on how strong your mid/bottom pair is relative to the board, that is to say, how coordinated is the board? I can think of 3 different situations where the best like would be bet, check/call, or check/fold for each.

Folding on the turn in the first hand was a mistake. Yes, he probably does have the ace. But the pot is huge, i say you have to call it down. With those odds you only have to win one time in 14 to break even. UTG+2 could be thinking there wasn't much action on the flop, i'm gonna bluff at this pot just because it's fun. Bottom line, i say you have to call.
