You did well to keep hammering until sixth street. I think you have to check the river. In the case where it looks like the other guy also has a big pair, then you're likely to get paid off by a worse hand, and unlikely to get raised, so a value bet makes more sense. In this case, the other guy is showing all little cards, and his first two cards are suited. He probably won't call with just a small pair, and he will almost certainly raise with a flush (or straight), so betting has a lot less value.
