Default Betting for information?

I hear this term bounced around from time to time, but I don't get it. Now I am fairly new, so it may be my inexperience. It seems to me that "betting for information" in the micros will rarely supply valuable information.

With the loose plays and players that will showdown with ace-rag, my take has been that the only information that I typically get is that they have 2 cards on the screen in front of them. I have been playing at party for only a week. In that time, I have flopped 3 monsters where I was leading the betting into a relativly uncoordinated board to be raised and have my 3 bet called. In all 3 cases, I bet out the river and was called by a player showing a missed draw or maniacal blind defense with 64 offsuit.

Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining, but my point is simply that the real information I need is my reads on the players, the texture of the board and my hand strength. I think the discipline of developing those skills is of far greater value.

I can well imagine that this concept may be of value in higher stakes or NL games, but does it play in micro? If so, a discussion of the merits would be appreciated by the naive 'round here. At least this one.

Thanks.

I would say you are right on target. There is a good thread on this from a long while back. I'll dig it up in a while when I'm done playing. Or maybe someone else who has it bookmarked would be kind enough to do it for me. You all know the Ed Miller thread I'm talking about.

No, he's being serious (at least I think he is ) . You are starting out with an excellent perspective on the game, and how the average player approaches it. Excellent post, keep it up.

Ed's Post on betting for information

Granted this post is regarding "3-betting for information," but much of the advice and concepts behind what Ed is saying here applies exactly to what you have said.
