Default Odd scenario...Ettiquete question

My friend said he was playing in a game the other night (home game) and he held Ax and the board was apparently something like A234x or something to that effect. (Anyone holding the 2,3,4, or 5 had a straight - but I can't remember which card.)

Anyway - say my buddy has A7 and his opponent calls his river bet and shows an Ace and says something to the effect of "I have Aces". My friend then said something like man I have you murdered on the kicker (which he did) but when his opponent shows HIS kicker he actually has a straight not a pair of aces like he originally stated.

How would you guys play this situation?

Cards speak. It's a home game: don't be a dick. If it's a regular problem tell the dude to stop misreading his hand.

It's not like the guy intentionally slowrolled him. If it's a low-limit home game, it's very likely that the guy just misread his hand since he's newer to the game. That's the reason why it's always smart to just simply flip over your hand on a showdown when beginning. Sometimes you will misread your hand, it's just going to happen.

I have seen it happen MANY times at the local 3/6 game, and usually the dealer catches it. At casinos, I believe it's customary for the dealer to catch who has the best hand if all the hole cards are turned over. If a player is showing a straight and his hand hasn't hit the muck yet (this is depending on how harsh the rules are at the local home game), then he should win the pot.

Default Ettiquette or EV?

Whether you want to be nice or keep a sucker in the game... he wins.
