Subway Ride. Preservation/Cowardice/Racism all before 9. Your Play?
This is 100% true and happened to me today on the 2/3 Subway line in Manhattan. This is not an ordinary occurrence, but does fit in a bit with this weeks ootia topics.
After a heavy night of drinking last night, I caught a pretty late subway down from my 93rd ST stop all the way to Wall St. As I am reading about the Yankees piss poor play and Isaiah Thomas' felatio of Maurice Cheeks, a young urban woman's purse landed on my shoe. As I groggily looked up from my paper---said woman is attacking her boyfriend, crying, screaming "you gonna disrespect me?" "Seven years, you [censored]" an older man who seems to know some restraining technique grabs the young women by the waist. The woman continues to scream as the boyfriend says "see I could [censored] you up right now, but I'm not." pretty much egging her on. Saying stuff like, "Oh you gonna [censored] me up? You strapped?" and more... Things sort of calm down after a few minutes as the woman sits down. Now the boyfriend continues with "go to work, go to work, that’s right - go to work" (part of the argument was that she works, he doesn't)..she gets up and lunges. He pulls a varitek (sans catcher mit) and pretty much hits her in the shoulder face area (maybe more of a mush). Now if this was a white dude in a suit. I'm pushing him and restraining him, while I get a cop at the next station. Since this guy was straight out of Compton. (Seriously, red bandana, white shirt, sweats, many tats, scar on the left side of the forearm) all I could do was step between them and restrain the girl with my left arm (which hurts like a bitch right now). Another dude escorted him off at the next stop as other women calmed the girl down. Pretty [censored] up morning. Rate my play? Did I display Racism? Or was it Self-preservation? What would you do? |

My standard play on a NYC subway is to MYOB. That said, I would have got up and walked to the next subway car.

Winner. Danger = Run away, unless you have something at stake. |

I think you did everything you could do. There is no reason to get stabbed or shot before 10:00 am. I see not hint of racism in any of your post.

Re: Subway Ride. Preservation/Cowardice/Racism all before 9. Your Play?
I wouldn't say racism, maybe a little bit of prejudice. Which is okay, we all have that to a degree, I think, whether we admit it or not.
Honestly though, I think if it would have been a white guy with a bandana, a bunch of prison tats, some knife scars, etc etc. you probably would have felt the same way. Am I wrong? What about had it been a clean-cut black man in a nice business suit? So maybe it has nothing to do with skin color and everything to do with the appearance of the villian. |
