What was Jerry Buss doing at the National Heads Up Championship?
I thought it was an invitational and that any rich guy couldn't buy in.

The better person this question should be asked of is Dennis Wager.

Re: What was Jerry Buss doing at the National Heads Up Championship?
apparently the NHPC invited the top 55 players in the world (there was a selection committee like the NCAA basketball tournament) and then 9 wild card invitations... buss was one of them, so was wager, james woods, rene angelil, and henry orenstein and a couple of others... it was invitation only... definitely couldnt just buy in

Dennis wager
This has been posted before but Dennis is a pure recreational player that just started playing poker about a year ago. The real story of how he got in is that this tournament was orginaly supposed to be "whales against the pro's". Dennis has A LOT of money and blows a ton at the golden nugget on his frequent trips. When NBC got involved and they changed the structure to the NHPC they said Dennis cant play. Well the Golden Nuggest threw a fit and told NBC that Dennis is a preferred customer and he had to play. The chances of him beating another professional by the way....at least 30 or 40-1.

Re: Dennis wager
On ANY given day, a drunk monkey could beat a pro, sometimes the cards really do speak.
There are no poker pros who DON'T have losing sessions . NBC could have done a much better job with coverage IMHO, they didn't even bother with final hands in some cases. I am guessing they were hedging their bets on the show. Hopefully they will stick with it in some other ways and improve 1000% next time. >TW< |
