If you had a read that your opponent would be pretty likely to bluff UI overcards, then nice hand. If he's passive, however, you probably should have just bet.

The check is good unless villain is so loose as to be willing to call a river bet with ace high. Against a normal opponent, only a better hand is calling here, while a worse hand may bluff if hero checks.

A passive player may also call with a 5 or a 7 here.

Edit: I think that against your average bear, checking is better. If he's not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed, however, don't automatically check this river.

Why don't we bet the river here? He has been calling down, do we really think he would wait until the river to raise? Also, I don't think the 7 improved him any. Your thoughts.

He's not calling down with overs but might bluff with them.
I like the river check.

It's not because we fear a raise, it's because he will (we assume) bet with more hands that we beat than he will call with. If we've been firing the whole way, he isn't likely to call a bet with ace high. He folds and we miss a bet.

But when we check, it shows weakness and he may think he has a shot at buying the pot, so we pick up an extra bet from him. Sure, he might check behind and we miss the bet anyway, but we are more likely to win an extra bet here on the river with this approach.
