Building a poker computer
I have a 2400+ Athlon w/ 768 meg ram. If I don't have PT stats window open the computer is fine but task manager is showing a CPU that is taxed pretty heavily. I would say 50 % of the time it's at 100% and the rest is at ~18%.
My pagefile usage is at 437 megs constantly. Because of this, I'm thinking of an upgrade. Any recommendations? How fast to I have to go before PT doesn't max out the computer? |

Re: Building a poker computer
Sounds like you're running some Spyware / programs you don't need. Close some programs you don't recognize in Task Manager

Re: Building a poker computer
Have you been compressing your PT database often enough ?
are you running DDR ram that maximizes your CPU capability ? If anything it sounds like a little more ram would not hurt. |

Definitely more ram would not hurt.

Definitely more ram would not hurt. [/ QUOTE ] 768 megs of ram is more than enough to run PT. It can be done with 512 easy. I concur with the others that he should search his machine for spyware. These programs can hog lots of memory. |

Wait a minute, doesn't the pagefile use hard drive space? He's talking about system memory here.
My pagefile, for reference is 1535 MB. Windows uses it as if it were ram. |

[ QUOTE ] My pagefile usage is at 437 megs constantly [/ QUOTE ] This suggests to me that he doesn't have his computer set up to use a static pagefile. He should, as it produces faster access. Also, "system memory" is a vague term. [ QUOTE ] My pagefile, for reference is 1535 MB. [/ QUOTE ] Clearly you let Windows manage it. How big your pagefile should be is a factor of the amount of RAM in your system, but static pagefiles are always better. *NOTE* After doing some thinking about this, I'm not 100% sure that I'm right about this when using XP. But I don't think it could hurt unless you are using a computer with limited HD space. |

Ok you're right in that system memoryis a vague term.
How about RAM? How's that. Indeed I think he should let Windows manage it. And I have a gigabyte of RAM. I just like having a large pagefile. FYI mine is custom. It has a minimnum size of 1536 and a max size of 3072. I didn't put the button next to System managed size. Not me. :P |

Well, I guess that's true. But there's not much about RAM a user can manage. He shouldn't let windows manage the pagefile. P.S. I added something to my previous post. |
