How do y\'all feel about Determinism?
We're on it in Ethics class right now. I haven't really formed a good opinion yet. What are your thoughts?

They're just the unavoidable consequences of my previous brain chemistry and every environmental factor that led up to it. I think determinism is uncertain.

Re: How do y\'all feel about Determinism?
Even if it is true, it's impossible for a person to think that they have no volition whatsoever. It also destroys the ancient concepts of praise and blame; no action is any better than another because all of them were the result of simple cause and effect. This, too, is impossible for any human being to seriously believe, and it would be taking Christ's maxim to the extreme: Judge not, because it doesn't make any sense to judge.
It's a philosophy that claims to know everything, and yet actually says nothing. |

Re: How do y\'all feel about Determinism?
You must evaluate determinism on its own merits before you worry about the consequences. However, I think it fails the empirical test for two reasons:
Physics is not deterministic There are no strict pscycho-physical laws Lastly, it is absurd to try to merge together the fields of ethics and physics/neuroscience. No neuroscientist will ever discover "the part of the brain responsible for free will," and that doesn't mean we should stop talking about free will or holding people responsible for their actions. |

Well, I'm not sure what you mean. Environmental determinism?
Racial? Intellectual? Economic? I'm a fan of self determinism. |

Re: How do y\'all feel about Determinism?
Determinism is an interesting gambling related subject. Prior to the invention of statistics, outcomes in what we now think of as games of chance were considered quite mysterious. An extreme view of determinism held that God, who is of course an omniscient and omnipotent being, dictated outcomes (of dice, cards, whatever). Thus, the earliest statistical studies of games of chance were considered by some in the Church as being nearly heretical. The notion that set rules predict outcomes and not God's Will, was a difficult concept for early gamblers to understand.
